OMG! poor rodney! everyone he knew, completely gone.
did any of them ascend? and can then maybe appear in a sequal???? *subtle hint*

Author's Response: If they did ascend, they don't get to come back and tell Rodney about it. I'm too mean for that. ;-) (It's his own fault, really, for suffering so well.)

Odd to use a work like 'lovely' to describe such a chilling tale but it is. Slowly building until it hits you. Two hundred years from his own time and all his people long dead. Brrr. (By coincidence, I was feeling like nostalgia music so I was listening to "Night at the Opera" by Queen and as I hit the point where they told Rodney the year, I heard Brian Mays' "39," a song about interstellar travelers who only experience a year in their voyage but come back a hundred years later thanks to Einsteine's cold equations of time. The last line of the song is '... all my life still ahead; pity me.")It fit just too closely. This is one impressive piece of writing.

Author's Response: Wow, thank you! I'll have to check out that song, because yeah, that's just the effect I was going for. Glad it worked for you!

You do a good cold-n-creepy. I liked all the versions I read, but I think this is the best.

Author's Response: Thanks -- good to know I wasn't shooting myself in the foot with all the rewrites.
