Loved the final one, of course :). As for the 5 ways, all were heartwrenching in their own right, all with the common theme of John being alone, being the outsider. I think 2 and 4 saddened me the most; 2 for that sudden realisation, at such a young age, that being on the team wasn't the same as being part of it; and 4 because, he's made it to Colonel, he's nearly 40, and still a few careless words have the power to break his heart and that just seems wrong to me. And being John, he'd just accept what he'd heard, accept that he's only there because of Elizabeth and never once consider that his own actions may have played even a small part in his promotion. Thank heavens for Rodney. Laura.

How sad for John, so many times he's been let down but wonderful that Rodney wasn't one of those people.
