Intriguing twists. Lots of potential - I'd like to see where it goes.

I really like the ideas. Nice group and the leave-taking was touching.

The story itself though isn't really a story yet. Rule of thumb - show not tell. The background detail is good, but for a story prologue it would be better to have the goodbyes, then deliver the background on why as part of a group conversation or later as explanations to the SGA team.
