They're Sheppard and McKay
They're Sheppard and McKay
One is a genius, the other's a pain
They woke up all the Wraith
They fly through outer space
They're Sheppard, they're Sheppard and McKay
...kay ...kay ...kay ...kay
"So, what are we gonna do today, Rodney?" Sheppard drawled as he entered the lab.
"The same thing we do every day," McKay snipped. "Try to defeat the Wraith."
He led the way to a sheet-draped lump, and whipped off the cover. "I've been working on this for some time, and it's finally ready. I call it the Resoceanancer."
"How about we name it later?" Sheppard wandered around the lab bench, eyeing the suitcase-sized gadget. "What does it do?"
"What does Atlantis have more of than anything else?"
Sheppard pondered for a moment. "Those weird green bubbly things?"
"Besides that." McKay gestured expansively, arms spread wide. "Seawater. We're absolutely afloat in seawater."
"So to speak."
McKay pointedly ignored him. "The Resoceanancer emits a high-frequency vibration. In normal atmosphere, that doesn't do much." He paused for dramatic effect. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
Sheppard stopped making vague surfing motions with his hands. "I doubt it."
"Submerge it, and the dense seawater alters the vibration to an ultra-low frequency that just happens to interfere with Wraith technology." He gestured even wider. "It effectively turns the entire ocean into a giant Wraith repeller."
"Okay, that's cool."
"I know. Sometimes my genius amazes even me."
Sheppard rolled his eyes, but agreeably hoisted the device and followed McKay down to the East pier. They launched the Resoceanancer off the farthest point of the city and watched as it settled slowly beneath the waves.
"Now all we do is wait. Within minutes, the immediate area will be Wraith-proof, and by tomorrow, the whole planet will be protected," bragged McKay.
"Is it supposed to do that?" asked Sheppard as a clump of bubbles burst upwards, then the surface of the water began to froth.
"Come on! There's an observation window in the lowest level out here!" The pair raced for the stairs.
The observation room was rather like a large glass barnacle clinging to the bottom of the city's structure. The room itself had no lights, but the weirdly phosphorescent quality of some of the ocean's flora gave a dim illumination to the surrounding water. The Resoceanancer bobbed below them, slowly sinking. Another cloud of bubbles wafted past it.
Farther down, a dark shape stirred. Details were lost in the inky depths, but whatever it was, it was massive. It was as though a piece of the ocean floor had decided to drift free. And it was coming closer.
The Resoceanancer danced in a sudden swirl of turbulence, then jerked to a stop as a huge tentacle shot upwards and wrapped around it. The device's casing crumpled, then the Resoceanancer was yanked downward. The two men could barely make out a gaping maw surrounded by tentacles, each as big around as a jumper at its base. Then the maw snapped shut, the Resoceanancer disappearing within like a piece of popcorn.
McKay stared out the window, his eyes very wide. Sheppard tracked the receding shadowy bulk with an interested expression. "Well, so much for the Resoceanancer."
Tearing his gaze away from the last few pitiful bubbles that were gently rising in the thing's wake, McKay slumped dejectedly toward the door. "Come on. Let's get back to the lab and prepare for tomorrow."
"Why, what are we gonna do tomorrow?"
"The same thing we do every day," said McKay as they trudged toward the nearest transporter. "Try to defeat the Wraith."
