It was a pleasant night, just cool enough for the remains of the little campfire to be comfortable. McKay nibbled a chocolate bar from their rations. "It's a pity they don't include graham crackers and marshmallows with these, y'know?" he mumbled around a bite. Sheppard snorted. "What? You got a problem with s'mores?"
Sheppard shook his head. "Kind of, but not that way."
"Even for you, that didn't make sense," McKay replied. Teyla's expression agreed, but then Teyla often seemed to have that opinion about the Earthlings.
"There was this one spring break, in college," Sheppard offered after a minute. "One of the guys got this amazing deal on a flight to Aruba, so a few of us pooled our money and rented a -- well, they called it a cottage, but really it was a hut with plumbing -- for the week. Real dump, but the surfing was amazing."
"Of course." McKay shook his head.
"Hey, don't knock it 'til you've tried it."
"Tried what, drowning with lumber?"
"Anyway.... So there we are, surfing all day and drinking beer all night. And it's great for a while, but eventually it occurs to us that maybe saving some cash for food would have been a good idea. Instead, what we had was two cases of beer and some spray cheese."
"Oh, man, I love that stuff."
"You would. We found a box of stale saltines that somebody had left behind. Joey insisted that it would taste better if we heated them up."
"You made saltine-and-cheese-whiz s'mores?" Even McKay sounded appalled.
"What are these 'smores'?" Teyla asked.
McKay explained the principle with some enthusiasm. Teyla looked unconvinced, but waved to Sheppard to go on.
"Well, it sounded like a good idea at the time. We were pretty drunk," Sheppard admitted. "We found some driftwood, built a nice little fire pit, but we couldn't get it started. Then Joey finds what he thinks is a bottle of whiskey, and since alcohol is flammable, he pours that on it."
"Most liquor's not really that flammable--" McKay started.
"No kidding. It's a good thing he didn't drink it instead, because I think it must have been kerosene in an old bottle. Went up like a bomb." Sheppard looked briefly mournful.
"What's the matter, did you scorch your cheese-whiz s'mores?" McKay sneered.
"No. But the saltines got pretty wet when it rained later that night." At the blank looks, Sheppard added. "The hut had one of those cutesy thatched roofs that you see in the islands. The fire took it out in seconds."
"You... lit a campfire indoors?" Teyla edged slightly away from him, as though the insanity might be contagious.
"We were pretty drunk at the time," Sheppard reiterated.
