Summary: When Lorne walks in by accident, Sheppard gets outted. When Lorne admits to the same, the question becomes how they will deal with each other now.
Story Notes:
This story is long! It has lots of angst! But, it is one of my favorite endings I've ever written! If you like romance or angst, or just the idea of Shep/Lorne, this is a story you'll want to read. It's one of my favorite I've ever written. And since I've been writing for just over twenty years now, that's saying something.
Just remember...if it can't happen in fiction, when can it?
"I met you once. Yeah, it was here on Earth. You know, the SGC, yeah, that was it." The guy rambled on. Evan tried so hard to keep the irritation from showing. "Yeah, you were the one that O'Nelson guy introduced me to, said you were some kind of genius or something."
Evan forced a strained smile onto his face, "General O'Neill probably introduced you to Dr. Jackson, sir. I haven't actually been on Earth in about 5 years."
The guy continued on insistently, "No, no, I'm sure it was you..."
Evan tuned the man out and began discreetly surveying the room for an escape. He smiled more easily when his eyes spotted Sheppard in his peripheral vision. "I'm so sorry, sir. I'm going to have to excuse myself." He turned to Sheppard, "Colonel..." Evan turned back to the man in the suit, "I just have to catch up on the patrol recruitment for the next meeting. If you'll excuse me." Evan smiled and grabbed Sheppard's arm.
Under his breath, Evan steered John away, "Sir, please talk to me for a minute, before the MP's have to carry me away for killing someone."
John smiled and laughed, "Let me guess, he was just sure that someone had introduced you to him before."
Evan nodded, "Yes, sir."
John shook his head, "He tried that with me, but General O'Neill saved my ass just as I was about to pull my nine mil on him."
Evan nodded and laughed lightly. "Good to know." Evan eased back a bit as they entered the less decorated cement hallway. The SGC was all done up, especially the gate room. John and Evan walked down the hallway in their dress blues. Finally, Evan asked, "Where are we headed anyway?"
John laughed, "Well, I was headed to the head when you stopped me."
Evan laughed, "Really? You know there's one right outside of the gate room, right?"
John nodded his head a few times, "I was looking for one that would take me a little longer to get to."
It was Evan's turn to nod. "Got a specific one in mind?"
John stopped. "Major, maybe you should head back to the party."
Evan stopped. He turned to look at his CO. "What trouble are you getting into now, sir?"
John shook his head, "None, just trying to slip away."
Evan shook his head, "Oh, uh, sorry."
John looked a little frustrated, almost as though he was torn on what to do. "You can come with me if you want to, I just thought it would be less noticeable if I went alone."
"What, exactly, will be less noticeable?"
Evan's expression told John that he was screwed. He might as well bring Lorne along now. He shook his head, but walked on past Lorne in a way that Lorne knew to follow him. "You'll see."
John stepped into the elevator and they started toward the surface.
Evan looked over at John, "Is this something that I should be preparing a defense for?"
John laughed lightly, "No, Lorne. It's not. If you must know, I have a jumper demonstration planned. Still feeling the need to suspect me?"
Evan furrowed his brow. "This is all just for a demo?"
John shook his head, "No, I just thought a demo would get me out of the crowds and into the air for a little while during this god awful thing."
Evan smiled, "Excellent idea, sir."
John smiled as he settled into his favorite seat. "Ah, home again, almost." He situated himself and got the jumper ready as the rest of the VIPs began filing out of the main door to the mountain. "Here we go. SGC, this is Colonel John Sheppard preparing take off."
"You're all clear, Colonel. Fly when you're ready."
"Affirmative." John saw the communications switch on his display. It was just him and Lorne again. "Let's give them a little show, shall we?"
Lorne grinned, "By all means."
John smiled over at Lorne as he pulled up into the air. They did a few maneuvers that the F-16s couldn't, then as a last trick they began to land. As they lowered themselves just in front of the crowd, they disappeared. There were ooo's and aahhh's . John smiled at Lorne and they knew they were the hit of the party. Now they just had to survive the schmoozing for a little longer, before they could leave comfortably.
Lorne started to reach for the cloak removal at the same time that Sheppard did. Their hands met just over the display. The cloak didn't disengage, but they sat staring at each other for a moment. Lorne removed his hand, "Sorry, sir."
Sheppard cleared his throat before he took a deep breath. He disengaged the cloak and smiled at the contingent before them. Lorne worked his way to the back to open the door and show the VIPs around.
As the party died down, O'Neill pulled Evan off to the side, "That little demonstration didn't require both of you, did it?"
Evan smiled, "No, sir. I just happened to need an excuse to get rid of a painful guest as the Colonel was leaving. He took pity on me, sir."
Jack nodded, "I know the feeling. I still hate these things."
Evan smiled, "My condolences on making General then, sir."
Jack chuckled, "Thanks, Major."
John walked up to his second in command and O'Neill, "What seems to be so funny?"
Evan shook his head, "Nothing, sir."
John looked at Jack, "Unless the General here has a problem with it, why don't you drop the 'sir' for a while?"
Jack nodded, "Fine with me."
Evan nodded, "Thanks."
John looked over at Hammond. "How does he do it?"
Jack shook his head, "I have no idea. These things are pure torture."
Evan watched as Hammond smoothly, patiently shook hands with the last of the VIP guests. The man turned and walked out with his guards. Hammond walked over to them. "Well, gentlemen, you should be comfortably situated for the night. You'll be free to leave in the morning."
John smiled, "0600 Earth time, sir."
Hammond smiled, "What time is that Atlantis?"
Lorne cleared his throat, " 0135 the next day, sir."
Hammond shook his head, "How you all adjusted to that, I'll never know. Me, I like 24 hours in a day, every day."
Jack smiled at the General, "Well, sir, I guess we're just old fashioned like that. These men are the future."
Hammond laughed, "That's what scares me, Jack."
Jack laughed, "I recall you saying that about me once."
Hammond smiled, "Still do. Well, gentlemen, I'm calling it a night. The granddaughters are having a surprise birthday party at grandma and grandpa's tomorrow."
Jack smiled, "I'll see you at 1200, sir."
Hammond nodded, "You do that, Jack. Gentlemen, have a safe journey."
John and Lorne both nodded and waved goodbye to the General. John turned back to the other two, "I think I'm going to call it a night too." He sat his drink down and patted Jack on the shoulder, "Sir." He nodded at Lorne and started toward the corridor toward his and Lorne's quarters. They were sharing bunks, something neither had down in years.
