Everyone is made up of pieces of the people around them. Sheppard and McKay are just more obvious about it.

I read this last night, but I had to let it settle before I could comment -- and I'm not easily squicked. Good job with the mood of visceral horror, and also with balancing the two separate crises. It took me a little while to get into the switching back and forth in time and setting, but once I did, it worked really well.
Oh, and the spitting idea is brilliant.
Some of the most critical battles of all never see a weapon drawn.
